My name is Jena Hanson, and I am honored to serve as the 73rd Princess Kay of the Milky Way. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent a community that has shaped my life in more ways than I ever imagined. The dairy industry has not only influenced my career path, but it has also given me purpose, passion and a deep appreciation for the people who work every day to nourish our world.
Growing up, I always had a strong love for animals. For the longest time, I believed that passion would lead me to a career as a large-animal veterinarian. I began mentorships through school to gain hands-on experience and learn more about working with livestock. What I didn’t expect was that these mentorships would completely change my life. It was during this time that I discovered my true love: dairy.
I had the incredible opportunity to work with three different dairy farms within my county, each offering unique experiences that helped me understand the depth and diversity of the industry. At these farms, I learned how to milk cows, assisted with calf chores, mixed total mixed rations and even served as a cow camp counselor, helping young students halter train calves for shows. I also had the chance to meet and learn from hoof trimmers, nutritionists and other professionals whose expertise keeps dairy operations running smoothly. These experiences opened my eyes to a world I hadn’t fully understood before — and I fell in love with it.
It was in those barns, on those farms and through those conversations that I realized my passion wasn’t just for animals but specifically for dairy cattle and the people who care for them. I made a major life decision: Instead of pursuing veterinary school, I chose to follow a new path and earn a degree in dairy science management. That decision led me to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where I am now entering my senior year. Once I obtain my degree, I look forward to working hands-on in the dairy industry every day.
I know now, without a doubt, that I made the right choice. I love learning from others in the dairy field, hearing their stories and gaining new perspectives. I thrive when I’m working directly with cattle, and nothing is more gratifying to me than seeing a job completed and completed well. I want a career where I can be hands-on, support dairy farmers and contribute to an industry that means so much to me.
Serving as Princess Kay has given me a meaningful platform to share my dairy story and highlight the commitment of farmers across Minnesota. My first 12 days at the Minnesota State Fair were unforgettable. I spent long, rewarding hours alongside the nine other finalists, answering questions, visiting with fairgoers and helping people better understand where their food comes from. Many visitors were eager to learn, and it was inspiring to help bridge the gap between consumers and the dairy community—especially during record-breaking attendance days.
I also had the opportunity to attend the Le Sueur and Blue Earth County Farm Bureau’s Breakfast on the Farm event. This visit allowed me to meet new families, explore farms outside my usual area and see firsthand the pride and care that farmers put into their work. Every farm I have visited or worked with reminds me of the diversity, resilience and neighborliness that make Minnesota’s agricultural community so special.
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire dairy community for the support you have shown me since the very beginning of this journey. Your encouragement, kindness and belief in young people like me are the reason our dairy community will continue to grow, thrive and inspire the next generation. I am proud to represent you and even more proud to learn from you.
As I look ahead to the coming year, I am excited to continue representing dairy farmers, celebrating their dedication and helping consumers understand the value of dairy in their everyday lives. It is an honor to serve this community, and I look forward to every conversation, every farm visit and every opportunity to support the people who make Minnesota’s dairy strong.
