MOM’S CHOCOLATE CHIP SQUARES

1 cup shortening

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

2 egg yolks

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

2 cups flour

1/2 cup walnuts

1 cup chocolate chips

2 egg whites

Pinch baking powder

1/2 cup brown sugar, loose and

  unpacked

Mix shortening, 1/2 cup brown sugar, white sugar, egg yolks, salt, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder and flour like a pie crust; press into 9- by 13-inch pan. Cover with 1 cup (or more) chocolate chips. Set aside. Make meringue by whipping egg whites, pinch of baking powder and brown sugar until stiff peaks form. Pour on dough; cover crust. Bake at 350 degrees for five minutes and then at 300 degrees for 20 minutes.
