I am proud to report that the future of dairy looks bold, delicious and more convenient than ever. I saw this firsthand during the Midwest Dairy Accelerator program this month. Two standout businesses emerged as leaders in the competition, creating a bright new space for dairy products, including ice cream pouches and probiotic power.
What do kid-friendly ice cream pouches and probiotic dairy supplements have in common? They’re both changing how consumers experience dairy, and they just won big in the Midwest Dairy Accelerator. This fall, four startups pitched their ideas at The Hatchery in Chicago after completing an 8-week intensive course on scaling a dairy business. Backed by Midwest Dairy and innovation partner VentureFuel, the program connected founders with industry experts, farmers and mentors to help turn vision into reality. I eagerly awaited the announcement of who would receive the prize money at the final step of the program.
RoseBud Ice Cream of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, received the grand prize of $20,000, along with consulting support. RoseBud makes ice cream easier for families with squeezable pouches. Founder Sam Rose said the accelerator opened his eyes to dairy’s potential: “I did not realize how much of a superfood dairy is. … It gives me so many ideas for how we can keep innovating.”
Zoguri, based in Omaha, Nebraska, was awarded the runner-up prize of $10,000. The company develops fermented dairy supplements featuring a proprietary probiotic strain, L. reuteri, designed to support digestive and overall health. Founder Daniel Rehal emphasized what the recognition meant for his team: “The recognition by Midwest Dairy is incredible and helps us reaffirm our mission to improve the health of others through fermented dairy.”
The other two businesses competing included Sugarwitch of St. Louis, Missouri, and Zoguri of Omaha, Nebraska. This initiative builds on Midwest Dairy’s previous partnerships with The Hatchery and No More Empty Pots, evolving from single-day pitch events into a comprehensive accelerator while maintaining the same core goal: supporting innovative businesses that use dairy ingredients in their products. By partnering with VentureFuel, Midwest Dairy extended the accelerator’s reach across the entire 10-state region, attracting a strong pool of food and beverage entrepreneurs.
For Midwest Dairy, the accelerator is about more than a single event; it’s about keeping dairy front and center in a fast-changing food landscape. By supporting products already in the marketplace and encouraging bold new ideas, the program reflects the innovative spirit farmers have carried for generations. Today, that same drive fuels entrepreneurs who are bringing nutritious, convenient and functional dairy products to consumers. From sustainability to functionality to fun, dairy continues to prove its versatility. And, with programs like the accelerator, farmers’ checkoff dollars are ensuring dairy remains at the heart of the table for years to come.
The accelerator program went far beyond prize money, giving these entrepreneurs the tools, resources and connections they needed to succeed long-term. By pairing startups with mentors from across the dairy value chain, including Associated Milk Producers Inc., Agropur, Iowa State University and the U.S. Dairy Export Council, participants gained hands-on guidance in areas like scaling production, consumer insights, manufacturing and retail strategy. This kind of support ensures that innovation doesn’t just stay an idea on paper; it becomes real products on shelves, driving dairy sales and value back to farmers.
The program ended with a live pitch competition judged by industry leaders from Instacart, My/Mochi, Dairy Management Inc. and more, further reinforcing the strong network surrounding these startups.
As consumers continue to seek out foods that are nutritious, functional and sustainable, dairy proves it can deliver in surprising new formats. The Midwest Dairy Accelerator ensures that vision becomes reality by fueling the entrepreneurs who are daring to redefine what dairy can be.
