Parlor Talk Talkin'

I felt a little guilty as my 6-year-old niece reminded me that I said during summer break, we could ride the pony. And then, somehow, summer break came and went; and here we are, in October, and I still had not made the time.

Yes, it was a busy summer, and it still is busy, but to a 6 year old whose every dream is to ride one of Aunt Jenny’s ponies, busy was not in the vocabulary. She talked about visiting the horses and ponies, and I kept making excuses. It was too hot, it was too muddy, I was really busy.

Then, the other day, I stopped in my tracks when I heard her little voice say, “Do you have time for me today?”

How could I have looked past this very simple task to spend with my niece who dreamed of this very minute for months? I dropped everything right then and there and gave her my utmost attention.

We spent an hour brushing the horses, cleaning stalls and riding. Her smile was priceless, and the simple words filled with pure joy were said: “This is the best day ever!”

That little task I’d been pushing off and being too busy for made her day. It made my day, too; just seeing how happy she was definitely reminded me to just not be so busy all the time.

Take the few minutes to brighten someone else’s day — it just may brighten yours, too.
