My sister and I haven’t shared a love for horses since we were little. We got our first pony when I was about 9, and my sister would have been about 5. We still have that pony 31 years later. She’s still as feisty as the day we got her even.
This past year, I had to lay my riding horse to rest, and my sister retired her horse, so we didn’t get to ride together last fall like usual. But earlier this year, I bought a new horse, and just a couple months ago, my sister bought a horse, too. Our favorite thing to do over the years has been going trail riding at a local horse camp in the fall. We finally got our schedules to line up, and we went this weekend. The colors of the trees were absolutely gorgeous, and the crunching of the leaves beneath horse hooves is so soothing. We had beautiful weather and an amazing time together. We even made it a full experience and cooked our food over the campfire. Going into the weekend, we set our expectations pretty low, as we had new horses and had not been camping in four years. But the horses far exceeded our expectations and pulled off a great weekend trip.
It’s so important to take the time among busy schedules to do the things you enjoy. It just seems to help realign your inner being and helps you take a break from the daily routine. There’s still plenty of good weather — I hope — so get out and enjoy it by doing something you love!
