There has always been the question of “Why do you take your calves away from their mom?” And it is a topic I don’t usually like to bring up because there’s so much controversy over it. And yes, I admit, I don’t like it either, but sometimes, it just makes sense.

Here’s an example. There was a first-time momma, and she was a little anxious and didn’t really know what to do and stepped on her calf. If I had not been there to step in and remove the calf, things would’ve not been good for the little calf. She didn’t mean any harm to the calf; she just didn’t know what to do. So, I stepped in and swooshed momma to another pen so I could tend to the calf. After a quick assessment, I knew something wasn’t right. The calf couldn’t put any weight on her front leg. I grabbed my phone and called the vet. It ended up that the calf had a fracture and needed a cast. The vet reassured me that it should heal just fine, maybe a little crooked, but it would be weight-bearing. There’s a first time for everything, I guess.

The calf is well on her way to recovery now and learned quite quickly how to maneuver with a cast. In fact, she never skipped a beat.

Again, I don’t want to open up a whole box of worms about this controversial topic; but if someone asks me why we separate momma and baby, I do have a story to share.
