“The Integrated Value of the U.S. Genetic Evaluation System” is the focus when dairy genetic enthusiasts gather on October 2, 2024, for the 10th Industry Meeting of the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB).

This annual meeting will be in Madison, Wis., on Wednesday morning during World Dairy Expo in The Tanbark. All dairy producers, industry professionals and genetic enthusiasts are invited to participate. View the agenda and register online for the in-person or livestream option.

CDCB Industry Meeting: The Integrated Value of the U.S. Genetic Evaluation System

Wednesday, October 2
Hospitality at 7:30 a.m. CDT
Program 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. CDT

“Genetic improvement in the U.S. dairy herd has been fueled for more than 100 years by teamwork – the combined commitment of dairy producers and the many organizations that collect, transmit and deliver individual cow data,” shared Katie Schmitt, CDCB Outreach Specialist. “This team includes milk testing organizations, dairy record processing centers, breed associations, A.I. companies, and businesses that provide genomic testing. Dairy producers benefit from this cooperation and the integrated value of the genetic evaluation system, and we’re proud to showcase that value at the October 2 Industry Meeting.”

More than 60 U.S. and international organizations work hand-in-hand with dairy producers to collect and deliver quality cow and herd data into the National Cooperator Database. The database was started by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is now stewarded by CDCB.

This unique cooperation within the dairy industry has set the global standard for genetic improvement and created the world’s largest database dedicated to animal performance. The National Cooperator Database delivers value to dairy herds through reliable genetic evaluations, management reports, new genetic traits, and performance benchmarks derived from aggregated cow-level data.

The engaging program on October 2 will highlight the value of collaboration, research underway and future benefits expected as dairy data management and genetic improvement evolves. Speakers and topics include:

  • Welcome, by Lindsey Worden
  • 2024 CDCB Annual Report, by João Dürr, Ph.D.
  • Understanding the Integrated Value of CDCB and Its Collaborators, by Amy te Plate-Church
  • USDA AGIL Research Updates, by Asha Miles, Ph.D.
  • CDCB Research and Development Initiatives, by John B. Cole, Ph.D.

Headlining the event will be a producer panel, “Using Cow Data for Progress On and Off the Farm.” Producers will discuss investments in data collection, how they utilize cow information to manage their herds, and how innovative types of data collection can lead to new genetic selection traits. Katie Schmitt, CDCB Outreach Specialist, will moderate the panel, as an informative and thought-provoking conversation with diverse perspectives from three producers:

  • Skylar Gericke, Triple G Dairy, Buckeye, Ariz.
  • Matt Hendel, Hendel Farms, Caledonia, Minn.
  • Jordan Matthews, Rosy-Lane Holsteins LLC, Watertown, Wis.

Although there is no cost to attend, registration is appreciated for appropriate planning; RSVP at this link. Walk-ins on the meeting day are welcome. Those who register for the livestream will receive the link the week prior.
