It’s official. We have a teenager in the house.

What does a farmer teenager want to do on his birthday? But, of course — help fill the silo.

A few years ago, we turned the Harvestore into a dry corn storage bin. It stores corn for contracts throughout the year but also daily use. We crack corn out daily into the mixer. The corn runs through a hammer mill directly out of the silo into the mixer for the milk cow ration.

Each year, as corn is harvested, the Harvestore gets filled, and it’s one of my son’s favorite tasks. Ever since he was old enough to talk, he’s asked to help fill the silo. This year was no different and, in his eyes, was a great way to spend his birthday.

The picture I attached is from his 4th birthday and seems to be an annual tradition. I’m not quite sure how we went from a toddler to a teenager in the blink of an eye, but we have. There’s no doubt that the farm bug has bitten this seventh-generation farmer.
