1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated or ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 large eggs
2 cups pumpkin puree
1 1/2 cup buttermilk
4 tablespoons melted butter

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Butter a shallow 3-quart baking dish. In a medium bowl, whisk together sugar, flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt thoroughly. In a large bowl, whisk eggs until light. Then whisk in pumpkin puree. Then whisk in buttermilk and melted butter. Add dry ingredients to pumpkin mixture and whisk until well-blended. Pour batter into prepared dish. Bake 45-55 minutes in a water bath until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream or a hot lemon sauce.
