Spring has finally arrived, and quite suddenly. I glance across the horizon, and I see field cultivators turning up fresh soil and corn planters making their way across the fields. I’m pretty sure if I went and sat in the hay field, I could literally watch it grow. I love watching everything come back to life after the winter nap, and my favorite part of spring is letting the cows out to pasture.

After a few minor repairs to the fence and dried up wet spots, the pasture was ready to go. The herd seems to know it’s time because they stand by the gate, patiently waiting for the big day. They all seem to spring to life the first day outside and frolic around explore every inch of the pasture. Once they settle down and lie down, you can almost see them smile as they soak up the ground’s energy and the sun’s rays. It adds a little more to the list of chores, but it is so worth it. They eat in the morning while we finish up chores, and, once the gate is open, they are free to come and go all day. At about 3:30 p.m., we round them up for milking time, and they then stay in overnight. They’ve gotten used to this routine and seem to fully enjoy it.
