Kids Corner: The Schrandt family

Grace Schrandt, 14
Eighth grade
When do you do chores? During the week, I do chores in the evening when I get home from school. On the weekends, I help with chores in morning and evening.
What is your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is bringing the cows up from the pasture because I get to ride the four-wheeler. My least favorite chore is bottle feeding calves because it takes a lot of time right now to warm up the bottles.
What is your favorite animal on your farm? Our calf, Bella. She is 10 days old. I like the pattern of her colors, and she is from a good cow family. I also like that she is a good eater and picked up on drinking from the bottle really fast.
What is your favorite subject in school? I like art. I enjoy crafts. Last year, one of our art projects was sewing stockings around Christmas time. I really liked that.
What is something you have learned in school recently? In history, I am learning about how the Native Americans originally got to North and South America.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I would like to be a dairy farmer or an artist because I like painting.
If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have a farm similar to ours – 50 dairy cows that would be milked in a step-up parlor. They would also graze and be certified organic. I would also have a farm dog.
What is your favorite dairy treat? Cookie dough ice cream.
What is your favorite part about farm life? I like being outside. I am an outdoor person. This summer, I enjoyed doing a lot of outside projects with my grandpa.
Are you involved in any activities? I am in church youth group, although we have not had any gatherings lately because of COVID-19. I like being with my friends my age. I am also more open at youth group than I am with my classmates at school.

Sixth grade
When do you do chores? I do chores in the evening after school and on the weekends.
What is your favorite chore and least favorite chore? I like bringing cows in from the pasture because it’s lively, active and fast paced. My least favorite chore is feeding newborn calves because it is not easy to teach them how to drink.
What is your favorite animal on your farm? A kitten named Hannah. She is about 3 months old and is all black. She is the only cat on our farm that will let me walk up to her and pet her. She trusts me.
What is your favorite subject in school? I like math because it comes easy to me.
What is something you have learned in school recently? A lot of it is review. In math right now, we are reviewing algebra.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a veterinary technician.
If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have a lot of employees, 100 dairy cows with a step-up parlor. The cows would be grazed and certified organic. I would also have 20 dairy goats, 30 sheep, 10 barn cats, three house cats and one dog.
What is your favorite dairy treat? A chocolate milkshake. I especially like the ones at the county fair.
What is your favorite part about farm life? I like getting to ride the four-wheeler.
What do you like to do during recess? I like to play Dead Man’s Creek with my classmates. One person who is it has their eyes closed and tries to tag others on the playground equipment. If the person who is it says, “Dead man’s creek,” while someone is on the ground, that person is now it.
