Family: Sipka Holsteins is a small family operated dairy. My husband, Doug, myself and our three children; Steph (11), Zach (9) and Jacob (7) are the entire crew.

Tell us about your farm. We milk 35 registered Holstein cows and raise all our youngstock. We have taken advantage of technology through the use of ET and IVF. We strive to produce cow families with multiple generations of excellent dams.

What's the busiest time of day for you? Mornings have always been the busiest time of day for me. I go out with Doug to set up and get milking started then come back in to get the kids up and ready to catch the school bus. I just recently started working for Farm Bureau Insurance, so I'm still getting used to my new career.

How much time do you spend doing farmwork compared to housework? I am not a fan of housework so it wasn't hard for me to put in the full time hours on the farm. I probably averaged three hours a day like most working moms; however, it was just that my time for housework was usually in the middle of the day between milkings.

What do you do in your free-time and why? I enjoy gardening in my spare time. My husband will tell you I like to plant much more than I like to weed.

What's the best thing about farming? The best thing about farming for me is being able to work side by side with my husband and children. I love being able to teach them the life lessons that can only be learned on a farm.

When you look back on your life, what do you want to be remembered for? If I look back on my life, I think the thing that I would want people to remember me for is my faith in my family. I believe as long as we are together we can get through any adversity.

How do you and/or your family reach out to consumers and the community to spread the word about dairy products and dairy farming? I have been a part of Common Ground for three years. It is a group of farm women who volunteer their time to help keep the conversation about food going in a positive way. As a CG volunteer I have taken part in several Ag United summer bus tours as the dairy person on the bus. I also take part in Ag United's Adopt a Farmer Program. I have four fourth grade classrooms that watch videos from our farm throughout the school year, and I do a classroom visit in the spring.[[In-content Ad]]
