Senior team undefeated in 4-H dairy quiz bowl
Members of the winning senior team included Andy Dougherty, team captain, Emily Costello, Rachel Demmer, Samantha Ehrlich and Kyle Kass. Coaching the team were Jeff Hammerand, Shirley Simon, and Lynne Wingert.
Dubuque County also won the junior division of the contest. Amanda Dougherty, Trenton Hammerand, Landen Knapp and Logan Wingert made up the top team in the junior division. Securing a first-place finish in the intermediate division was Delaware County. Team members were Nick Bagge, Mindy Burkle, Katelyn Goldsmith, Kaleb Kruse and Matthew Lansing. The team was coached by Brian Bagge, Michelle Heims and Jennifer Zumbach.
Contestants with the top scores on the written exam were recognized in each division. Amanda Engelken of Delaware County had the top test score in the junior division while Adam Simon of Dubuque County secured top honors in the intermediate division and James Goldsmith of Delaware County and Mary Scott of Fayette County tied for first in the senior division.
Each member of the winning teams and the top individuals on the test were presented a 4-H item. The top team in each division also received a traveling plaque in memory of Connie Stewart and her daughter, Sarah, both of whom lost their lives in a tragic plane crash. Connie had served as a coach for the Fayette County teams and Sarah had participated on dairy bowl teams for Fayette County.
Teams from Benton, Delaware, Dubuque and Fayette County participated in the contest. The Iowa 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest is held annually and includes a written test, with part of the test questions used in each round of the contest, a phase with team questions, toss-up rounds of 15 questions and bonus questions that are earned each time a team has three of its members answer a question correctly during a round. Questions cover a wide range of dairy knowledge including genetics, reproduction, nutrition, milk marketing, herd health, udder health, dairy foods, milk quality, calf raising and dairy breeds.
