Our Princess Diaries

Princess Juliana removed her makeup last night, showered and quietly went off to bed. It had been an exhilarating and exhausting evening with a flurry of activities. She was more than ready to get back into a normal routine. Hours earlier, she sat while a friend straightened her hair and styled it for her. Then, big sister, Jenny put makeup on her. She was feeling uncomfortable with the attention and especially the makeup. The result was a very pretty, nervous and excited princess Juliana. Princess Jessica wondered if she could leave her hair in the updo she wore for coronation, in hopes that it would still be cute in the morning. She removed all the bobby pins, let her hair down and slipped into bed; very grateful that the evening had turned out as well as it did. She too, had gone through similar steps to prepare for the evening. Jessica fretted because Jenny was late to updo her hair and Mom had to start the process. Let me tell you, that it is a scary thought to have Mom in charge of hair and makeup. Sad to say, but that's never been my department! I was so relieved when Jenny showed up to take over. I was in charge of making sure we stayed on schedule. And I made sure that nothing was left behind. I had the dresses, shoes and jewelry already in the van. There had been weeks of preparing for this day; the search for dresses and shoes, the issue of matching with the escort, getting the dresses altered to fit, deciding on hairdos, even practicing walking with the dress and shoes on! Both princess's had been anxious about the evenings events. "What if I trip on the steps?" "What if my escort walks too fast?" These questions and many others had bounced around in their heads weeks, days, hours, and minutes before the events of the night. It was exciting, but it was also very nerve wrecking. Homecoming is always a big event in a small town. It has been and will be a big event in this household as well. There is a schedule of events stretching through the week, culminating in a day full of activities on Saturday. The beginning of the hype began with the Homecoming Coronation which took place last night. For many years the coronation took place on a Tuesday during the school day so that the student body could participate. This year, the coronation was on a Monday night. A Monday Night Football Monday at that! To top that off, it was a very big game with our own Vikings taking on Green Bay. More significant was the fact that the Packers sixteen-year quarterback was not wearing a Green Bay uniform; he was on our side, wearing a Vikings jersey! Because of these two facts, the gymnasium was not crowded at all. I was glad that it all seemed more relaxed and quaint. I suppose there were many who missed the multitudes of students (K-12) who kept up a continuous roar. I didn't. The evening turned out very nice. With only a few mishaps to add to the other fond memories of the day, both princesses were glad to get home and relax. So, it's off to bed with sweet dreams and happy thoughts for both of my Homecoming Princess's. Good night, Princess Juliana. Good night, Princess Jessica. Your diaries this day are full![[In-content Ad]]
