Officers elected, awards presented at Iowa Junior Holstein Association meeting

DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Iowa Junior Holstein Association members elected Jessie Hammerand of Epworth, Iowa, as president of their organization during the Iowa Junior Holstein Association annual meeting on Dec. 28. The annual meeting was part of the third annual Iowa Junior Holstein Convention held Dec. 28-29 at the Comfort Inn & Suites in Dyersville, Iowa.
Also serving on the new officer team are: vice president, Michael Bahl of Dubuque, Iowa; treasurer, Kyle Demmer of Peosta, Iowa; secretary, Megan Rauen of Farley, Iowa; reporter, Rachel Scott of Westgate, Iowa; historians, Rachel Demmer of Peosta and Bethany Simon of Farley, and digital historian, Andy Dougherty of Epworth. Elected to serve as district directors were: for District 1, Tom Shirbroun of Farmersburg, Iowa; Mary Scott of Westgate, Blake Courtney of Ridgeway, Iowa, and James Fossum of Waterville, Iowa, and for District 8, Bethany Simon and Josh Simon, both of Farley.
Cow awards were presented to seven junior members for 2011. Carly Lyons of Castalia, Iowa, was honored with a second Progressive Breeder Award, which is presented each time a junior member has five cows that qualify for Star Breeder status. Michael Lyons of Castalia was recognized with the two-star breeder award, and receiving the one-star breeder award were Scott Stempfle and Jessica Stempfle, both of Maynard, Iowa, and Mary Scott and Rachel Scott, both of Westgate.
Matt Henkes of Luana, Iowa, and Carly Lyons were each the recipients of two 25,000-pound cow awards, while Michael Lyons had one cow qualify for the award.
Thirty-one juniors took the Holstein Dairy Bowl Exam to determine who will represent Iowa at the 2012 National Holstein Convention. Securing a spot on the junior team were Alyssa Dougherty and Andy Dougherty, both of Epworth; Adam Simon of Farley and Katie Stewart of Oelwein, Iowa. First alternate for the junior team is Nathan Arthur of Sumner, Iowa, and second alternate is Mary Scott.
Garnering a seat on the senior team were Michael Bahl, Kyle Demmer, Jake Mills of Strawberry Point, Iowa, and Megan Rauen. First alternate is Joey Adams of Waucoma, Iowa, and second alternate is Austin Knapp of Epworth.
Representing Iowa in Dairy Jeopardy will be Nathan Arthur in the junior division, with Amanda Dougherty of Epworth as first alternate and Regan Demmer of Peosta as second alternate; Mary Scott in the intermediate division, with Austin Knapp as first alternate and Sally Hamlett of Aurora, Iowa, as second alternate, and Jessie Hammerand in the senior division, with Joey Adams as first alternate and Josh Simon as second alternate.
Approximately 50 dairy youth attended the two-day event which featured a "Roll the Dice" theme. The juniors participated in games, mixers, a dance, watched a movie and took part in fun rounds of dairy bowl.
