Kids Corner: The Wieners
12th grade
When do you do chores? At 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. During the school year, I help mom get started milking goats in the morning and help finish feeding calves. When I get back from school at 4:30 p.m., I help feed at the two neighbor farms where we have our youngstock and little goats. At 6 p.m., I milk goats and sometimes help milk cows.
What are your favorite chores and least favorite chore? My favorite chores are feeding the calves and baby goats. I really love seeing the reaction on their face when they are done drinking. My least favorite is milking cause I think it's boring.
Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? Goats because they are a lot more easy to handle than the cows.
What do you want to be when you grow up? Massage therapy.
If you had your own farm what would it look like? I would have a hobby farm with a couple horses, 10 beef cows, and about 20 goats.
What is your favorite class in school? Math is my favorite subject because I like working with numbers and solving problems. I also enjoy choir because I love to sing.
What's the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? Working on a dairy farm is a very big advantage for getting almost any kind of job. People are looking for hard workers, and that's the main thing on a farm - hard work.
Victoria Wiener, 16
10th grade
When do you do chores? In the morning, I go to the other farms where we have our youngstock and cows and goats. When I get back on the weekends, I feed the milking goats and help clean the cow barn. At night a feed cows at 4:30 p.m. and at 6 p.m. I feed the milking goats.
What are your favorite chores and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding the baby goats. The least favorite chore would be cleaning out barns.
Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? The goats are my favorite because they are easy to handle and are really friendly.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I really haven't decided for sure, but am looking into Childcare Development.
If you had your own farm what would it look like? Similar to the one we live on except maybe a little more technology.
What is your favorite class in school? History because I love learning about the past and what happened.
What's the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? I would say it would be the work ethic and responsibility you get out of it. It will help you a lot in the future with your job.
Derek Wiener, 14
8th grade
When do you do chores? I do chores at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. In the morning I do the feeding on the other farms where we have your young stock and little goats and at night I help milk cows, feed calves, and steers.
What are your favorite chores and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is helping my Dad milk cows and my least favorite chore is cleaning the barns.
Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? The goats because they are nice and don't kick hard.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I don't know yet.
If you had your own farm what would it look like? A little bigger than the farm I live on now but with more technology and equipment.
What is your favorite class in school? Gym because it is fun.
What's the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? Driving tractor and having wide open space to have fun.
Evan Wiener, 12
6th grade
When do you do chores? At 6 a.m., I feed calves before school and 6 p.m. I feed calves, help in the goat barn, and feed cows.
What are your favorite chores and least favorite chore? Helping with the cows is my favorite because cows are awesome. My least favorite chore is feeding cows haylage.
Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? Kennedy, our dog, is my favorite because she is always happy to see me when I get home from school and she likes my attention.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to try to get into a major league sport.
If you had your own farm what would it look like? I would have a 60 stall barn with a manure pit. I would have a house just like the one I live in now.
What is your favorite class in school? Gym because I like sports and games.
What's the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? You get to deal with animals that you like and you have something to do when you are bored.[[In-content Ad]]
