Kids Corner: The Brands
11th grade
When do you do chores? When I'm not in school from about 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then again from around 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
What's your favorite chore and least favorite chore? I enjoy a lot of the chores, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be moving heifers. I like the challenge of running the animals. My least favorite chore is a tie between rock picking and covering our feed bunkers. They both take a long time and involve a lot of heavy lifting.
What's your favorite animal on your farm? My favorite animal would be a cow. Her number is 2036. I showed her about five years ago and won reserve grand champion. She milks well and has a great temperament.
What's your favorite subject in school and why? In school my favorite subjects are history and social studies. I think they're interesting and ever changing.
What do you like about going back to school? I like seeing all my friends after not seeing some of them for a summer.
What's something you've learned in school recently? I learned about psychology and the workings of our mind.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I hope to be a politician, so that I can help people and change the world.
If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I'd have it near a highway and it would sit on a few hundred acres with the farm in the center. It would have around 800 cows and be surrounded by corn and alfalfa fields.
What's your favorite dairy treat? Chocolate milk. It's the best thing you can have after a workout and it tastes great.
What do you like about fall? I like watching the trees change and playing football under the lights.
Are you involved in any activities? What's your favorite? What do you enjoy about it? I play football, basketball, tennis and I am in FFA. Basketball is my favorite because it's such a graceful game.
Lauren Brand, 12
Seventh grade
When do you do chores? After school and during the day on the weekends.
What's your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding my rabbits because I like spending time with them. My least favorite chore is giving BST because it takes so long and it's boring.
What's your favorite animal on your farm? My favorite animal on the farm is my 2-year-old cow, Jewel because I showed her twice at the county fair and she is really friendly.
What's your favorite subject in school and why? I like science because it is fun to do labs and experiments.
What do you like about going back to school? I get to see all my friends and meet my new teachers.
What's something you've learned in school recently? In math I learned about integers.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a chiropractor.
If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have a bunch of horses and stables. I would also have a bunch of dogs.
What's your favorite dairy treat? Cookie dough ice cream.
What do you like about fall? I like that the weather gets cooler.
Are you involved in any activities? What's your favorite? What do you enjoy about it? I take horse riding lessons and I also play the flute. My favorite is riding horse. I like riding because it is fun to ride around barrels and poles.
Austin Brand, 9
Fourth grade
When do you do chores? Every day when I'm not in school.
What's your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is milking cows in the parlor, which I learned this summer. It's my favorite because I like to talk to our Hispanic employees. My least favorite is sorting through registration papers for mom because it's boring and there are a lot of them.
What's your favorite animal on your farm? My favorite animal is my cow, Clover. She was the first calf I ever showed at the fair.
What's your favorite subject in school and why? My favorite subject is science because I love animals, biology and doing experiments.
What do you like about going back to school? Seeing my friends and recess.
What's something you've learned in school recently? I learned about the different kinds of maps in social studies.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a dairy farmer with lots of cows.
If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. My farm would look a lot like my mom and dad's - lots of buildings, a parlor and automatic calf feeders.
What's your favorite dairy treat? Chocolate malted milk.
What do you like about fall? Helping with the harvest and riding our gator.
What do you like to do during recess? I like to talk with my friends, Corey and Tyler. Usually we talk about how we are going to buy my farm and all three of us are going to farm it together.
Logan Brand, 8
Second grade
When do you do chores? I do chores after school and on the weekends
What's your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is helping my brother give BST to the milking cows. My least favorite chores is feeding calves because we have a lot of them and it's boring.
What's your favorite animal on your farm? I like all of our cows. I like them because they make delicious milk.
What's your favorite subject in school and why? I like phy. ed. because I'm a fast runner and I like to play with my friends.
What do you like about going back to school? I like to see my friends again and meet my new teacher.
What's something you've learned in school recently? I learned how to add two numbers together in math and a new song from our priest at mass.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a dairy farmer.
If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. My dairy farm would look like Dad and Mom's farm with lots of barns and I would label them compost barn, milking barn and calf barn. They would all be connected.
What's your favorite dairy treat? I like them all but my favorite is vanilla ice cream.
What do you like about fall? I like that there are lots of leaves on the ground.
What do you like to do during recess? I like to play soccer with my friends during recess.
