Shelby Kuechle, 14
Eighth grade
When do you do chores and what chores do you do? I help milk cows on weekend mornings around 5:15 a.m. to about 9:15, depending on the morning. I also help feed the heifers around 4 p.m., and do my normal chores around that same time (feed the rabbits, goats, cats, dog, etc.)
What are your favorite and least favorite chores? Favorite: Milking cows by far. I'm not really sure why; I just enjoy being around the animals. Least favorite: Scraping mats. I hate scraping manure.
Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My favorite animal(s) are our 218 cows. It's like they all have their own personalities, just like humans.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I would love to be a dairy nutritionist. I went to Gopher Dairy Camp at the U of M last spring, and we met a dairy nutritionist. It seems like a really cool job.
If you had your own farm, what would it look like? My farm would look pretty similar to what we have currently. I am happy with our farm and really wouldn't want it to be any different.
What's the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? My favorite thing about growing up on a dairy farm would be the experiences we get to go through that some kids might never get to go through in their entire life.
What is your favorite dairy treat? My favorite dairy treat is cheese.
What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the winter? To be honest, I don't really like doing anything on the farm during the winter, especially this one. It's bitter cold, icy, and the amount of snow we have is overwhelming. I've gotten stuck with the skid loader a few times.
What is your favorite subject in school? My favorite subject in school is probably health. We are currently learning about nutrition and I love that subject.

Sidney Kuechle, 12
Sixth grade
When do you do chores and what chores do you do? At 4:30, I feed the rabbits and goats.
What are your favorite and least favorite chores? My favorite chore is feeding the goats and my least favorite part of chores is having to go out in the cold weather and snow.
Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My goat is my favorite animal. He follows me around and tries to give me hugs. I love showing him at the fair for 4-H.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a teacher when I grow up.
If you had your own farm, what would it look like? My farm would have lots of goats.
What's the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? I like having lots of space to bike and play outside. I like having a big area for my goats to play.
What is your favorite dairy treat? Ice cream.
What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the winter? I like to sled. My dad makes a huge pile of snow and it's fun to sled down.
What is your favorite subject in school? I like math, because it's fun.

When do you do chores and what chores do you do? At 4 p.m., I feed the chickens, rabbits and cats.
What are your favorite and least favorite chores? In the summer, my favorite chore is taking care of my calf. My least favorite chore is cleaning out the chicken pen.
Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? Yes. My favorite pet is my dog, Chester.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a teacher.
If you had your own farm, what would it look like? My grandma and grandpa's farm.
What's the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? I love living in the country, because I have so much room to play.
What is your favorite dairy treat? Yogurt.
What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the winter? I like to sled.
What is your favorite subject in school? Math, because it's fun to learn new things and solve problems.

Porter Kuechle, 7
Second grade
When do you do chores and what chores do you do? I do chores at 4 p.m. I feed my rabbit, chickens, and dog.
What are your favorite and least favorite chores? My favorite chore is scraping manure - I love it. I don't really like chasing cows with my dad.
Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My favorite animals are the cows because I work with them a lot. I like training my calf for the fair each year.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a farmer and drive Case IH tractors.
If you had your own farm, what would it look like? My farm would look just like ours - except I want to have a grain bin that is a chicken coop.
What's the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? The best thing about growing up on a farm is getting to help my dad work.
What is your favorite dairy treat? Vanilla ice cream.
What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the winter? During the winter, I like to sled down the big piles of snow my dad makes.
What is your favorite subject in school? My favorite subject in school is math because I'm good at it.
