From the hip
A farm baby will learn
How to chase a cow calmly
How to gently make a cow turn
From the hip a farm baby hears
Plenty of sweet whispers in the ear
The occasional cuss word
But learns never to fear.
The time they spend on mom's built in bouncy seat
Subject to tickles and giggling
Pausing to talk about the cows and life
Or to calm the wiggling
Baby sees that farm mom
Works because of passion for all that grows
She works steadily
She works with love, and hopes baby knows
This lucky farm baby
Learns what sounds each machine makes
Tractor, trucks, milkers,
And learns what each task takes
The simple comfort a baby gives
Is evident when they can make mom smile
Even when stressed about life
A baby's smile gets them through any trial
Farm baby learns
What it takes to get through each chore
A little love and patience, strength and grit
Even dancing across the barn floor
As a farm baby stares into
Those big brown bovine eyes
They learn that those wonderful creatures
Are mom's daily way to be near to their cries
That perfect seat upon mom's hip
Is the right place to watch while she collects eggs
Stirs up a quick lunch
Or helps a wobbly new calf to its legs
From farm mom's hip
Baby learns about giving
How farming is working, pushing through
Worth it all, for it's wonderful way of living
I find myself frequently answering the question, "What do you do with Henry while you are doing chores?" Well, the answer usually is, "He's on my hip, when he isn't eating the cow's feed." From this farm mom to all the rest of you out there, have a terrific Mother's Day. I hope it is everything you wish it to be. Whether that means you get the night off from chores, or get to have your whole brood helping you.
Jacqui, her dad, sister, and brothers milk 550 cows and run 1,000 acres of crops in the northeastern corner of Vernon County, Wis. Her children - Ira (7), Dane (5) and Henry (infant) - farm with her while her husband, Keith, works on a grain farm. She loves to cook, quilt and garden and wishes there were more hours in the day to get it all in. Farming and teaching others about farming are her passions.
