Dubuque County advances to national 4-H dairy quiz bowl

OELWEIN, Iowa - A team from Dubuque County won the senior division of the Iowa 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest and will advance to the national contest to be held in early November at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky.

Members of the team known as the "Milkaholics" were Michael Bahl, Kyle Demmer, Courtney Ehrlich, Jessie Hammerand and Scotty Wolf. Coaching the winning team were Jeff and Tammy Hammerand and Shirley Simon.

The "Milkaholics" avenged its only loss of the contest as they defeated Fayette County twice in the final two rounds of the double-elimination competition held June 16 at Oelwein High School.

Seventy-six 4-H members representing Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque and Fayette Counties in northeast Iowa and O'Brien, Osceola and Sioux Counties in northwest Iowa participated in the contest which had three divisions, junior, intermediate and senior.

Fayette County was victorious in the intermediate division as its team went undefeated. Team members included Joey Adams, Nichole Fagle, Dayle Lantzky, Molly Schmitt, Kelli Steinlage and Brandt Wade. Marilyn Steffens coached the team.

In the junior division, Delaware County overcame one loss to defeat Fayette County twice and garner the championship. Kari Fitzpatrick, Katelyn Goldsmith, Matthew Lansing and Jamie Nefzger were team members. Coaching the team were Brian Bagge, Katie and Ryan Moriarity, Michael Tekippe and Jennifer Zumbach.

Awards were also presented to five 4-H members with the top scores from the written exam. Jessie Hammerand, Dubuque County and Ben Pausma, Osceola County, tied for first in the senior division; James Goldsmith, Delaware County took top honors in the intermediate division and Mary Scott and Caryn Stewart both of Fayette County tied with the highest test score in the junior division.[[In-content Ad]]
