Pierz, Minn. Morrison County 80 cows
How did you get into farming? I was born here and grew up with it. I started helping right out of high school. Then we farmed in a partnership for a while. I bought the farm from my parents five years ago in June.
What are your thoughts and concerns about the dairy industry for the next year? Mostly the milk price. I wish we had more consistent prices. Then we would know how to budget our money.
What do you enjoy most about dairy farming? I like milking cows, doing fieldwork and being my own boss.
What advice would you give other dairy farmers? Make your own decisions and don't watch what your neighbors are doing.
What has been the best purchase you've ever made on your farm? The skidloader; it has made chores faster and easier.
What has been your biggest accomplishment while dairy farming? How did you achieve this? I get my cows bred back on a timely basis. I started doing my own breeding in 1995 and spend time trying to catch them when they are in heat. I try to get them on 12-month calving intervals.
What are your plans for your dairy in the next five years? I would like to build a new calf barn or a grain bin dryer.
What is your favorite thing to do on the farm? I like cutting hay. I like the smell of freshly cut hay. I also really enjoy harvesting in the fall to see what you got at the end of the year.
What is your favorite dairy product? Vanilla ice cream.
What is your favorite tool? A disc grinder or jack knife.
How do you like to spend time when you are not doing chores? I like to go to farm meetings or farm shows. I also bowl once a week.
What is your favorite technology? The smartphone. I like looking things up on the Internet.
Tell us about a skill you have that makes dairy farming easier for you. I am pretty good at keeping cows healthy. I try hard to make sure they are fed right and taken care of.
If you could have a celebrity help you with chores for a day, who would it be and why? Donald Trump. I would like to show him what farming, especially dairying, is like.
